Tips From Experts On A Healthy Garden

Are you getting into gardening for the first time in your life? You probably don't even know where to start. It's no secret that beginning to grow your own garden for the first time can be a bit overwhelming. Below are some tips that can help make growing your own garden a bit easier.

A great way to get rid of slugs and snails is to install a copper barrier around your planting beds. First remove all slugs and snails that are inside the area. Next, use two inch copper wiring to surround your beds. Slugs and snails will not cross a copper barrier and so they will stay out of your garden.

You can easily make a homemade yeast trap to attract the slugs in your garden. Just use about half a teaspoon of baking yeast, a teaspoon of sugar, and water. Fill a glass jar with the mixture and put it in the ground, flush with the earth. Slugs will enter the glass jars, and eventually drown.

Planting a garden is a great way to save on food costs. Anyone can grow vegetables with a little bit of planning and maintenance. Involve your children with the garden, it is a good opportunity for them to learn a little science and you may even be able to get them to try new vegetables.

Grow a herb garden. You can buy packaged herbs, but it's much more economical to grow your own. Grow them where they are easy to pick, such as in a garden bed near your back door, in pots on the patio, or in a kitchen window box. Herbs require plenty of sun and good soil. Moisture requirements depend on the variety of herb. Herbs that are easy to grow include chives, parsley, sweet basil, sage, thyme and rosemary.

As you have seen, gardening is not as scary as it may appear. Just think of all of the benefits it has to provide you with in regards to health and food. The above list of tips should have given you a good starting place, so that you can start growing smarter.
